EU ACCESSION: PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR UKRAINE'S RELATIONS WITH ITS CENTRAL EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURS

Short description

The project “EU Accession: Practical Implications for Ukraine’s Relations with its Central European Neighbors” was launched in August 2002 and is designed to respond to the challenges of the EU enlargement eastwards. Through comprehensive research the project seeks to provide concrete information and in-depth analysis on which the involved parties (various audiences in Ukraine, accession countries and EU member states) can gain an in-depth understanding of the new situation, rather than make assumptions based upon general political considerations. The project will also suggest specific policy recommendations for governments of Ukraine, EU member states and Ukraine’s central European neighbors, as well as make recommendations to relevant NGO and business audience and provide advice to international donor organizations operating in Ukraine.

For this purpose, the project will complete three research studies, which will cover a spectrum of issues from the general prospects of cooperation between Ukraine and the enlarged EU to specific issues of trade and economic cooperation, movement of people and cross border cooperation between Ukraine and EU accession countries, the problems of Ukraine’s border management in the context of EU enlargement and cooperation in the field of Justice and Home Affairs.

In the end, it is believed the project will help policy-makers and key civil society actors in Ukraine, accession countries and the EU in making sound decisions, which will help enhance benefits and minimize potential costs of EU eastward enlargement. It will also improve mutual understanding and cooperation (both at the governmental and non-governmental levels) between Ukraine and its Central European neighbors, and between Ukraine and the EU.
